The Friends of the Library (FOL) are in the midst of their annual fund drive, and it occurs to me that some county residents may not be familiar with the Friends, a group that for many years has worked somewhat "behind the scenes".
They may not be the most visible bunch, but their efforts have had a dramatic impact on the library, both inside and out, and you don’t have to look far to see the fruits of their labor.
Money raised by the FOL supplements the library's materials budget, allows us to keep pace with current computer technology, and improves the building and grounds.
So, if you have contributed to the Friends fund drive in the past, you have helped provide the library with two iMac Internet stations, a word processing station, a fax machine, the desks and chairs for the stations. You've also provided desks and computers for the staff room.
Patron Tut Perrins is a frequent user of the Internet stations. She calls them, "A great resource, it allows me to keep in touch with the rest of the world. And, while I'm online, my kids are using the library's other resources. It's great.”
But it's not just computers, money generated by the Friends annual July 4th book sale has been used to significantly enhance the book and audio tape collection. If you've enjoyed a good book on tape lately, or used some of the libraries' reference room material, chances are you've benefited from the Friends fund raiser.
