high-pitched "coo-coo-coo" call crows make with neck arched and bill pointed downward.
I have been an avid student of crow language since the age of 14, when I had a pet crow. I caught him the day he left the nest — perhaps a couple of days too early — in a small woods across the road from my house. Bob-tailed and dull black with blinking blue eyes, he was apparently dazed by his fall. He allowed me to catch and carry him home under my jacket. The parent birds made no fuss, apparently unaware of what had happened. This was not a rescue effort; I had always wanted a pet crow. I kidnapped him.
Today in Virginia what I did would be against state and federal law. Crows are now considered migratory birds. It is illegal to keep them without a special permit. But this was in Pennsylvania in the 1960s, when a crow was considered a pest and was not given legal protection.
