The historic Avon Hall estate in the Town of Washington will be the setting Sunday afternoon, Sept. 30, for a festive garden party and guicbc ed house tour to benefit the Rappahannock Historical Society.
Cooter’s nationally recognized band will be playing “Rappahannock Rhythms” during the afternoon as guests enjoy a buffet of Virginia savories and learn about the history of Avon Hall, a 200-year-old Federal home which sits on a knoll above a pond near the Warren Avenue entrance to the Town of Washington.
The garden party at Avon Hall is from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Guided tours of Avon Hall start at 3 p.m. The last tour is at 5:15 p.m.
This will be the first time in four decades the home will be open for a tour. Dressed in costumes, members of the historical society will escort guests, in small groups, on a guided tour of the home’s main entertaining rooms on the first floor. It also is an opportunity for residents and guests to see this landmark which the Town of Washington is considering buying.
Before the festivities begin at Avon Hall, everyone is invited to attend the 2 p.m. dedication of the new addition to the historical society building on nearby Gay Street. There will be a short ceremony, followed by light refreshments. Visitors will have an opportunity to tour the new museum and research rooms. Admission is free to the ded
