The trees were trimmed up in the mountain, and then dragged to the house with a horse. A large chain was fastened around the tree and then to a single tree behind the horse.
This was very scary for me, because the horse had to pull the log down the hill, and she had to go very fast as the big log was sliding faster than the horse could walk.
The commands to the horse were “come up” meaning to move, and “whoa” meant to stop. The horse would bring the logs onto the wood pile just the way they were commanded.
The logs were then cut into lengths so they could be handled and put on a saw horse. This was made to hold the logs you were sawing in place and at an angle so you could saw at waist height and could get more power.
