for birds but birdseed is more nutritious and much less expensive. Still, if you find yourself with a few stray pieces of stale bread, there is no sense letting it waste. Tear the bread into small pieces and put it in your yard where birds can see it. If you are offering more than a few slices I recommend offering it on a tray feeder to prevent undesirable critters like mice.
Corn is also a great bird food for birdwatchers on a budget. I have found that the larger the amount you purchase the better the value. I usually purchase a 50-pound bag at a time. At our home feeder I have found that the cardinals enjoy cracked com mixed with the sunflower seeds. That is good news because corn is a great bargain.
Whole or cracked corn is available at most bird supply stores but the best value will most likely be at your local farm supply store, they deal in bulk and pass the savings on to us.
If you like to feed squirrels in your backyard, you will find that dried ear corn is the food of choice for squirrel feeders.
