must avoid a national backlash against our fellow Americans who are Muslim.

Third, it became clear, from seeing how other nations have rallied in support of this country, that we truly do represent a “melting pot”, and a “land of opportunity” to the world. We are, for the most part, a nation of immigrants, whatever our individual heritage or our personal opinion about future immigration policies may be. It seems important, at this particular juncture in our nations history, to positively reaffirm these ideals.

Given these observations, and the strong, national need to honor both the victims and their families, and the heroic and selfless efforts of the rescue workers, here is an idea:

That Sept. 11 be declared a day on which the United States comes together to celebrate the peaceful cultural diversity of this great nation.
