No such national day of recognition currently exists, as far as I know. What better way to honor those who died on Sept. 11, and those who continue to risk their lives in rescue and recovery efforts, than by establishing a focus for that day that affirms our country’s positive and optimistic commitment to peace and unity, in the face of that which would divide and destroy us and that for which our nation stands?
This idea is not complete without a name for that day, * and I’m sorry to say that I don’t have a suggestion. Perhaps it would help our children heal if they were allowed to suggest possible names. I think the Statue of Liberty, gift of the people of France, who has stood steadfastly in N.Y. Harbor as this tragedy has unfolded behind her back, would approve.
