Fall is officially here and you can see it everywhere. The leaves on the walnut trees have started falling, the days are shorter, and the shadows are longer. The night temperature has gotten cooler and this is causing a change in the mountains.
We are able to turn the heat on these cool nights to take off the chill, but it has not always been this easy. Much has changed over the years.
When I was young, wood was our only source of heat. You had to begin early to get your wood supply for the winter. You could not predict when the winter would begin, and there needed to be plenty wood available in preparation for a long cold winter.
Everyone had a wood pile, and this consisted of an ax, a chopping block for splitting wood, and a cross-cut saw. Anyone of these meant hard work.
My daddy would go to the mountain and cut the trees that he selected. There was plenty of wood available, but the dead wood was cut first, and the more suitable was left for timber.
There was no power saws, so the ax was used to cut a notch in the tree, then the cross-cut saw was used to saw the tree down. They knew how to notch and saw to make the tree fall a certain way.
