Thank you
Easement donors
As the year 2000 began, this paper printed a
map of easemertt-proteeted properties here at
the end of the Twentieth Century.
We then used this space to applaud County officials for their tough-minded dedication to keeping Rappahannock scenic - and we particularly thanked those landowners who had donated the conservation easements on the map. and expressed our hope that many other landowners would give easements in the 21st Century.
Easement protection has over the last two years increased almost 30 percent to nearly 13,000 acres. For this, we offer thanks for the grass-roots leadership of local organizations, particularly RCCA and RLEP.
We can also thank the assistance and education programs of the Piedmont Environmental Council which have made its nine-county service region home to one of the most successful private landscape preservation projects in the United States.
But mostly we thank the landowners themselves for making the tough property-by-property decisions that are. in fact, implementing the "Scenic County” policies of Rappahannock's ordinances.
Individual landowners are what make these policies work.
