It is legal to hunt and trap bobcats in Virginia during set seasons. The price for bobcat pelts has recently risen and some wildlife biologists feel that increased trapping pressure could possibly threaten bobcat populations in some areas.
It is estimated that only fifty percent of all wildlife survive their first year of life and that bobcats and other pure predators suffer even greater odds.
Since bobcats are mostly nocturnal, problem encounters with your pets can usually be avoided by keeping them indoors at night or by making sure outdoor animal enclosures are strong and secure. Bobcats, like any other animal, will seek the prey of least resistance. Not given a culinary choice, they will eat their natural diet of rodents, rabbits and other small delicacies.
Bobcats are a reminder of the wild nature found in the Virginia Piedmont.
Rare opportunities are those in which one can observe a bobcat in its natural habitat, as they rarely allow themselves to be seen by humans. Unlike mountain lions, bobcats have adapted to human settlement of wild land.
Even a woodlot in a farming area can sustain a pair of bobcats. Often people living on farms and in small towns are unaware of bobcats living nearby.
