The first week back at school pitted the basketball teams against Bull Run District competition, as all three squads were in action at home on Friday, Jan. 4. The Varsity faced the Mustangs from George Mason High School in the nightcap. The Panthers jumped off to what appeared to be a home court advantage as they took the early lead 6 to 2. The Fairfax County boys came racing back and finished the first quarter with some hot shooting of their own and a 22 to 13 advantage.
The Panthers held their own in the second quarter bv scoring 20 points, but retired to the locker room at halftime down 46 to 33. The Panthers never challenged in the second half and fell to 0 and 2 in the District with a 70 to 59 loss to the Mustangs.
The JV game that preceded the Varsity contest saw the two sophomore brothers, John and David, combine for 38 points to lead their team past the JV Mustangs from George Mason. Freshman Monte Christian contributed 11 points as the JV Panthers won by the score of 62 to 50. This keeps the JV team 2 and 0 in District competition.
Prior to the start of the JV game, the Junior Panthers squared off against Signal Knob Middle School from Strasburg. After a low scoring first quarter that saw the JP’s down 8 to 4, they charged back with 18 second quarter points and led at the half 22 to 12.
