To replace a rubber sole there was a repair kit that could be purchased. A small medal device was used to rough up the old worn sole and a certain glue was applied before the sole was added.
This was called a half sole replacement. It was cut at an angle and slanted and went about half way of the foot arch so it would not hurt your foot.
If a leather sole was needed, this would be cut from a larger piece of leather. The rough side would go to the inside and the slick side on the outside. Then with a tack hammer and brads (tacks) the sole was nailed in place, making sure the tacks did not go all the way through, because this would hurt your foot. Any excess of leather was trimmed off.
If you wore the heel down or lost a part of one, there were rubber heels available.
If the stitching on your shoe broke or needed restitching there was a special needle (awl)
