As expected, both teams struggled valiantly back and forth as the lead se-sawed between servers-Rapp went up 2-0, then 5-2; Madison came back and went on top 7-5; Rapp rode Sharp's serve to a 9-7 lead before Madison took it back 10-9.
Sophomore Danielle Hiserman served the Lady Panthers back on top 11-10, just to watch as the Madison team scratched to within one point of the game and match with a 14-11 lead. It was a wild finish as young Burke had several key saves and the Lady Panthers defeated the Madison side 16 to 14 in the final game to win the match two games to one and earn a berth in the Championship contest against William Monroe. It was almost anti-climatic, after the Madison win, as the Lady Panthers put away the girls from William Monroe two games to none (15 11 and 15-6) and won their first ever Mountaineer Classic Championship. It was a heck of a Christmas break for the team and the coach. Afterwards, Coach Suzie Zylonis said, “We beat Madison in their own house and won their tournament. It’s been a great 37 hours.”
The winning didn’t end for the volleyball teams when school started in the New Year. The Ladv Panthers traveled to Fairfax County to face the Lady Mustangs at the George Mason HS gym on Friday, Jan. 4.
Good things continued to happen in the city as the country girls from Rapp defeated the Lady Mustangs 15 to 12 in the opener and 15 to 10 in the second and deciding game.
