Today, Martin Luther King
Day, I heard that a man was dead. A man from the community that I grew up in. But someone I never knew while growing up there. A man who performed all over the world, but whose music I had never even heard of before moving to Charlottesville in 1966.
I first heard John Jackson at the Prism Coffeehouse in 1970. It was there, as a matter of fact, that I first learned of the existence of traditional African American blues! This was music not heard on radio or television. I was to hear him at the Prism on other occasions over the years, most recently in October 1998 when he appeared at a Prismsponsored concert along with Ralph Stanley celebrating the American Heritage Fellovys Awards those two great traditional musicians had received.
