Mr. Mercer said that the coordination of the building trades programs across the community college system is of the utmost importance. “Programs from architecture to welding have components that deal with the construction industry, and we want to make sure everybody across the state is working together,” he said.
“A statewide outlook will allow us to respond more quickly to requests from industry for specialized programs. In addition,” he added, “a coordinated effort will help us consolidate resources, which is very important in today’s economic climate.”
Bill Mercer’s experience and reputation make him the perfect candidate for this development role. He owned and operated a construction firm, has been working with colleges and industry groups for the past few years to establish national standards for training programs, developed the Manassas campus carpentry training program, and was instrumental the success of the annual Construct-aCareer Camp for middle school students held at the Manassas Campus.
