The Watkins Company had a record of many first “things”. The red liniment made from Asian camphor and red pepper extract was their first product. It was always kept on hand and had many usages.
There was white liniment used for aches, a healing salve that my Daddy used for any kind of cut or sore. Not only for us, but on any of his animals that had a wound.
Other medicines for the farm animals was horse liniment, disinfectant, and sheep dip.
The list changed according to the family needs. There was much to choose from.
J. R. Watkins, 28, founded the J.R. Watkins Medical Company in Plainview, Minn. This was one of America's first natural remedy company where associates market went directly to the consumer. The company moved in 1885 to Winona, Minn, which was a booming logging town on the banks of the Mississippi River.
The Watkins Museum in Minnesota has a complete collection of the “Watkins Almanac Home Doctor and Cookbook”. The first one was published in 1901.
Their herb tablet (vitamins) was introduced in 1922, and Watkins was ahead of its time in realizing the benefits of vitamins.
Gold Medal honors were received at the Paris International Exposition in 1928 for their vanilla and black pepper. The award sealed the Company’s reputation for their high quality gourmet ingredients.
