Rappahannock County’s most famous and revered writer, former U.S. Senator Eugene J. McCarthy, has just published a new collection of his essays on country life and manners, titled “From- Rappahannock County.”
Ranging over subjects from merkle hunting and turkey calling to coon dogs and country stores, the book presents the author’s observations and reflections on living in Rappahannock County, which he has done at his rural Woodville home for more than a quarter century. It is written with the wit and wisdom that has characterized the man that America got to know as a Senator and presidential candidate, and that Rappahannock residents got to know as a friendly fellow who would drop in to local stores to drink coffee and swap stories.
Lately, Senator McCarthy, who is 86, has suffered some health problems.
He is currently staying at an assisted living facility in Washington, D.C., after a stay in the hospital. By telephone last week, he displayed his irrepressible humor about his situation.
