New York Central Railroad and lost his life at a service yard at the age of 27. His grandmother was the first woman telegrapher in the United States, and his father signed-on with the New York Central Railroad in 1908 and worked as a trainman for 43 years until his death. Phil too worked for the rail industry, but in his case it was a brief stint servicing locomotives in New York between high school and college.
