On Friday, May 24, the stage was set for a competitive contest with last year’s district champions, the lady Cougars from Manassas Park.
The game was close for three innings until seniors’ Kelly Atkins and Gwen Johnson walked with one out in the bottom of the third.
Sophomore Jamie Deal laid down another perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third.
With two outs, junior Rachel Sharp slashed a double into right center that broke the game open.
The lady Panthers went on to win 3 to 0.
The win gave the “Girls’ of Summer” outright ownership of both the regular season and tournament championships — a coveted position for any team, in any sport in the Bull Run District.
Prior to the varsity championship game, the JV team dismantled the JV team from Brentsville behind the steady pitching of sophomore Brittany Thornhill and some heavy hitting by the JV lady Panthers.
The 14 to 2 win was the first ever Rappahannock County JV championship in fast pitch softball.
This was especially satisfying after being the bridesmaid in this championship game the last two years.
Freshman Megan Payne led the JV 16-hit attack with four singles on the day.
