I would be willing to support your secession on one condition: That the 10-lane highways you want to build must stop at your borders, and that your sprawl must stop there also. We would let you visit on weekends (just to refresh your memory of fresh air, green spaces and friendly folks) if you would promise to return to your own state by Monday morning.
After all, we’ve got a North Carolina and a North Dakota, so what’s wrong with letting them be North Virginia? Abe Lincoln fought a war over the principle that secession was impossible, but we wouldn’t be that foolish. So go ahead, raise the taxes on yourself and smell the heady aroma that seduced Jefferson Davis and his crowd a century and a half ago. And you can keep Manassas. We fought over it twice, but after what you’ve done to it in these last 25 years, we don’t think it’s worth fighting over any more.
