By Janet Herr Special to the Rappahannock News . A recent Virginia Housing Development Authority hopsj-ng workshop found the following items to be true:
•/There is a growing gap between income and housing cqsts^, for very low-income people.
• There is a shortage of affqrdable housing in Rappahannock County. •. ..Much of the housing available to very low-income people is in extremely poor condition. . i •, There is a lack of public aw.arepess and support for hop&ing issues; therefore, affordable housing is not a local priority.
One solution would be to repair/remodel the existing housing inventory in Rappahannock County.
Rapidan Better Housing,, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Housing, has zero percent interest funds to lend to area homeowners for housing repairs that include wells and/or drain fields. A limited apapiint of grant money has also, been made available to very low-income citizens under’this program. . , Rapidan Better Housing is a, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to help area homeowners maintain safe, sound and decent housing by offering affordable
Joans and grants for major lousing repairs.
