THE FUNERAL
TRADITION
The English word “funeral” is derived from the Latin word “funeralis”, meaning torchlight procession. In fact, largely due to superstition, most funerals in ancient Rome were conducted at night, at which time an almost carnival-like atmosphere prevailed and men carried wax death masks of previously deceased family members. Like the Romans, the Greeks located their cemeteries outside city walls for reasons of sanitation and superstition. This necessitated a procession to carry the deceased to the cemetery. While bathing and dressing the dead fell to female family members, carrying the dead was assigned to the men. The Greeks even prohibited women from joining funeral processions unless they were over 60 years old or, if related by blood, over age 16.
