it could come apart in order to be moved. A sculpture comes to life
Michael Saulnier’s job was to make the pool table - the sculpture — come to life.
As Mr. Dwyer finished a piece, Mr. Saulnier began his work. Each piece was sanded smooth so that there was no rough spot anywhere and then a sealer coat was applied. A couple of coats of heavy varnish were sprayed on with more sanding in between each coat. Finally all of the visible surfaces were waxed until they gleamed and only then did it became clear why the choices of both the Tiger maple of the legs and Quilted maple of the sides and rails were so essential.
Both Sam Dwyer and Michael Saulnier have been cabinet makers all their lives and have come from cabinet making families.
The move
The finished piece weighs close to 1600 pounds with each of the four legs weighing easily over 80 pounds. The slate top was over 800 pounds.
When ready to move the pool table from the shop to its new home, four professional movers were called in. They couldn’t budge it. Finally seven men were gathered, and even with the slate, the sub-table, the top rail and sides removed, leaving only half of the table remaining, they were just barely able to move it.
