“They definitely worked us,” admitted Roach.
“If we were assigned as a floor page, we’d be on call to deliver messages back and forth to their offices, bring them water, or deliver papers,” Roach explained.
She remembers well the day she carted around several volumes of a Congressional Record — a bound, printed transcript of the entire day’s proceedings that is issued on a daily basis.
Pages are paid, and are expected to conduct themselves in honorable fashion.
“We wore a uniform,” said Roach. “Gray slacks or a skirt with a white blouse and a Navy blue blazer and a red, white and blue tie.
“We were given strict instructions about where we were to be seen or not seen,” said Roach, who added that there was a lot to see and do when they had free time but certainly there was an early curfew when they needed to be back in the residence hall.
Pages were treated to a performance of “Aida” at the Kennedy Center and a visit to the Naval Academy in Annapolis.

They’re working but they’re learning as well and Roach, for one, feels that her experience afforded her a history-making experience.
“I spent nearly three hours on the house floor during the Traficant hearings,” said Roach.
James Traficant, a House representative from Ohio, was expelled from Congress.
“I remember sitting there on the bench and another Congressman walked by and commented to me, This day will go down in history,’ “ said Roach.
“I’ll never forget that process and he (Traficant) insulted my Congressman,” said an
