Got Band?

The Band Program in Rappahannock County is constantly evolving; no year is ever the same, and there’s lots of new stuff this year! Here is an overview of what’s in store for 2002-2003.
5th grade band
Beginning band is an opportunity for all students to try an instrument and learn notes and rhythms. The entry instruments are flute, clarinet, saxophone, horn, trumpet, baritone and trombone with percussion added the second semester for the most rhythmically talented.
Every student must start with an instrument that reads notes the first semester; students are expected to practice at home from 15-30 minutes per day.
Last year marked the highest level of beginner progress noted to date: this band played with the 6th and 7th graders on the Spring Concert.
6th and 7th
grade band
This group begins the process of learning scales and patterns needed for more difficult levels- usually VMEA 2 and 3. Increased time is spent sightreading, exploring music from various historical periods (from Renaissance to contemporary), and some students switching from entry level instruments to tuba, oboe, bassoon, tenor or baritone sax, tympani or xylophone; students are expected to practice at home 30-40 minutes per day.
