At that point, and before Chairman Pete Estes had an opportunity to speak, Mr. Cole said that it could be located elsewhere—in another county—and he withdrew the application.
Other activities
• Interim Superintendent of Schools Helen Williams reported on the optimism of. administrators and teachers about the upcoming school year. She also noted that the new greenhouse will be in place before the start of school, and she announced that two school buses and "seven or eight cars for parts" will be auctioned off on Aug. 22.
• Mrs. Williams introduced new high school principal Roger Mello to the Board. Mr. Mello said that his vision is to make the high school, especially since so much money is spent on it, a focal point of our community. He also said that he wished to afford all students every opportunity—to go to any college that they wished and to focus on those who wanted to stay and "run our community." Mr. Mello told of the "tremendously talented people coming in" and he said that he would work to eliminate turnover in the schools by creating an atmosphere that would encourage teachers and staff to stay.
• The Board unanimously approved the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board performance contract for the year.
• County Administrator John McCarthy reported that most of the research had been competed and the field work started by Traceries Inc. in their historic survey work. He noted that forms were available in his office for anyone wishing to be included in the study.
• The Board okayed the recommendation of a contract award to L. G. Zindel Inc. for Phase I work on the Sperryville Gateway Project in the amount of $98,970. The awardee was the low bidder of three responsive bidders, and the recommendation will be passed to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for their action.
• The Board approved a resolution recognizing Amissville Fire and Rescue s Fiftieth anniversary.
• The Board reappointed Rosa Crocker to the Recreational Facilities Authority.
