Washington Mayor Stdw Willis. Planning Commissioner A1 Henry, Town residents Charlie Kevis and Mitzie Young, RLEP President Bob Lander, Town Planning Commissioner Barbara Stockton, Sunnyside neighbor Jack Jenkins, Susan Babcock, Steve Kenny and Donna LaPre, Brenda Van Ness and others said that they were worried about the impact of the proposed institute on Harris Hollow Road, Fodderstack Road, and Town of Washington traffic, and many suggested alternate sites, such as the old Black Kettle restaurant and motel, for what was generally characterized as a welcomed endeavor.

Supervisors say no

The withdrawal of the application was made after the Supervisors began to comment.

Hampton Supervisor Bryant Lee said that his phone had been "ringing off the hook" over the past two weeks, and that the majority of the calls were about the traffic impact of the proposed institute.

He said that most did not oppose the concept, but did oppose its location, and he added that ’ there is no way I could go for the plan."

Wakefield’s Roger Welch spoke of the need to balance property rights writh consideration of the impact of one's activities on others and he suggested that, because of the weight of opinion against the application, "the proper thing to do would have been to withdraw."

He also expressed disappointment in the actions of the Planning Commission and said that his opposition was not because of traffic, but because the application itself "does not comply with the Comprehensive Plan."

Stonewall-Hawthorne District Supervisor Bob Anderson joined the others in opposing the application.

He too said that phone calls received were heavily against the location of the proposed institute and its traffic impact, and he added that he wished that it could be located elsewhere.
