The first half of the tour will focus on marches, encampments, and engagements in Rappahannock County including the skirmish at Battle Mountain, in which General George A. Custer attacked a mhjor column of Lee’s retreating Confederate army as it approached Culpeper to regroup after its debacle at Gettysburg. *
Then the tour \jill cross Chester Gap and se^many of the sites that Ms.'Delcour will mention at the Aug. 20 meeting about the Rattle of Front Royal—as well as learn about the dragging deaths of five of Mosby’s men in reprisal for guerilla activities, the secret work of spy Belle Boyd, and other Civil War history in Front Royal.
The Blue Ridge Civil War Round Table serves Rappahannock, Madison, Culpeper, Warren and Page Counties. The group has monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of the month, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
In addition to hosting presentations, the group undertakes projects to preserve local history, plans to debut a website, and is working on a Civil War map of Rappahannock County. Upcoming speakers at the group will discuss local campaigns in our area and the Battle of Chancellorsville.
The Blue Ridge Civil War Round Table is also co-sponsoring “Sperryville Civil War Days 2002,” a reenactment and historical interpretation of major Civil War events in Sperryville on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22.
This event takes place along Main Street in Sperryville and features living history re-enactments (encampments, drills, demonstrations, weapons displays, and more), Civil War music by period musicians, author talks and signings, a street fair, kids’ activities, memorabilia, and vendors.
