"We're going to take a nononsense, zero tolerance approach to this. I think this is an issue we're going to be especially tough on," Chappell said.
During a discussion on the weapons’ policy before it was adopted, board member Rosa Crocker wondered how this zero tolerance for students and visitors would affect parents coming on school grounds.
She asked what the response would be to a mother who was coming to pick up her daughter and had a carpet cutting tool in the car. Board member Aline Johnson also wondered about the hard-edge stance, asking what would happen if a parent who was a security guard came on campus with his or her weapon in a vehicle.
In response to Crocker’s and Johnson's concerns about the decision's implications for parents Chappell said, "I think we would use discretion in these decisions. There's no doubt about that."
