On the other hand school officials would react differently if someone, not related to the student came on campus carrying a knife on their belt, and asked to visit the student. "To me that poses a threat," he said.
However, Chappell did not see the need for such leniency for students. "Students need to remember that they've gone hunting the night before," he said, "and take that hunting implement off the rack or out of their pocket." He felt students needed to remember that weapons of any kind were not suitable for school. "They're simply not welcome on school property;" he said.
Also discussed were updates to the school's policy regarding reports of child abuse and neglect. Chappell said that while the current policy is simply a paragraph, the new one, which he has seen implemented in other schools and which he has discussed with Director of Social Services Beverly Leathers, will be more in depth.
