It is so ridiculously easy to get
on the California ballot that there will be dozens of candidates for governor in the famous recall election featuring Governor Gray Davis.
In Virginia, there is a higher standard and should be. Any serious candidates for statewide office should have enough people willing to sign petitions on their behalf so that we don’t end up with the kind of monstrous ballot that will face California voters in October.
California is often the pacesetter in national trends, but Virginia remains one of the most traditional minded states in the union, although, perhaps, not so traditional as in former times.
And I think that’s great. We have had a budget crisis in Virginia but it has been well managed by Governor Mark Warner and the Virginia General Assembly and when the economy recovers, the state should be restored to fiscal health. Our constitution requires a balanced budget.
