Virginia gubernatorial elections often have persons on the ballot who are not associated with either the Republican or Democratic parties. For instance, back in the 1960s George Lincoln Rockwell, head of the American Nazi Party, was a candidate and, as I recall, got about three percent of the vote.
But the state’s stringent laws regarding removal from office of public officials and high standards for placement on the ballot make it practically impossible for anything resembling the present California scenario to occur in the state. And that is good news.
If anything nice can be said about the coming California circus election, it is that the campaign time will be mercifully short, coming in October unless Governor Davis can get it postponed which seems unlikely.
The ballot will be a voter’s worst nightmare with all the dozens of candidates. And since anyone who gets around 30 percent of the vote, or even less, can win, the bet here is
