Rappahannock News’ readers have read articles in the past from Jerry Och’s pen, and these were well-meaning and sincere efforts to acknowledge the fact of drug and anti-drug (alcohol) use. The problem ■referred to in the “out of control” article was trumped up by Mr. Butler in his effort to fix something that does not need fixing: our sheriff’s department. The generalizations that he suggests to face this “problem” have a certain ring to them, like rooting out the axis of all evil. The strength of the newspaper headline made the reader feel that these statements were facts.
The reviewer included the drug quote to send shivers up any mother’s or father’s spine— how sad that a nine year old should know so much, especially out here in Rappahannock.
But this kind of information, though sketchy, is learned through conversations, and this only leads me to believe that drugs are a big topic of conversation. That they are a big problem, an “out of control” problem, is not the case. I feel certain that we have our sheriff, Larry Sherertz and Capt. Jeff Brown of the DARE program as well as parents and the school, to thank for much of that.
