21, 1918. Leaving by train that night and arriving at Jersey City, N. J., late the next day, they were transported to the "Leviathan” for the voyage to France.

Keep in mind that these men probably had not been out of the Virginia country side, their whole lives. Awaiting them in the harbor, in sight of the Statue of Liberty, was this monster of a ship that measured 289 meters long and 30 meters wide. With the three big smoke stacks towering high above the deck, this was an awesome sight for these young boys.

A book “ Over the Top with the 80th Division” recounts the experiences on the “Leviathan.”
