Cabaniss and Johnston, and his maternal grandfather, the late George L. Morris, was a leading Birmingham entrepreneur.

Col. Cabaniss attended the Sewanee Military Academy and graduated from the U S. Military Academy at West Point in 1944. He was commissioned in the field artillery and served in Germany as an air observer for the 42nd Infantry Artillery, then battery commander and headquarters commandant of the 4th Constabulary Regiment in Austria.
