REMEMBRANCE While death may mark the physical cessation of being, the influence of those who came before us lives on. As long as there are memories and the continued influence of loved ones, our parents and grandparents inhabit our minds and hearts. In many cultures, deceased ancestors remain part of the lives of their surviving relatives by virtue of formrn visitations. Just as Americans regularly visit graves on holidays, birthdays, and days of final departure, the Japanese take time off each August to pay homage to their dearly departed. At that time of year, people flock to the cemeteries to visit ancestral graves, pray, and ask for their ancestors intercession in hopes that it will make a difference in their lives.
