J.D. Almond wants to make a difference. In his realm, he sees high school kayaking teams paddling down Rappahannock’s rivers and varsity mountain-biking teams tearing through its woods.
He says, “The only limit is your imagination. Why do we in Rappahannock County have to be on the same track as everybody else? Use what you have to your advantage and you don’t need the Taj Mahal of sports facilities.”
Almond, whose initials stand for “Jeffrey Duane,” is the newly appointed Athletic Director of Rappahannock County High School. And he thinks out of the box, probably because his background and experiences in athletics as in life were also out of the box. He has had to make do with what was given to him—and not what he would have asked for in a perfect world—for many years.
