years, he hated it, he says. “It was way too much time in the car.”
He got into coaching part time. “Tennis was where I wanted to be.” He coached women’s tennis at Chantilly High School part time in 1992, and “had a ball,” and sold computers the rest of the time to make ends meet.
Chantilly led to the Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg, where he was jack of all trades, including computer teacher, dean of students, and women’s tennis coach “all at the same time,” he says.
He had to learn how to innovate, and creative thinking came naturally. He had 28 women on the team and only two courts on which to play. There, he formulated how he likes to coach.
“I’m a firm believer in enforcing and enforcing the basics of the sport, any sport. I take everybody, no matter what their level, back to square one and build their skills up again.”
