After many hours of confusion, just the basic locations of the mess halls and washrooms were finally learned. Enduring days of bad weather, boredom, and encounters with German U-Boats, they finally arrived at Brest, France.
Brown Smith and Rollie Utz would survive the war. Brown was wounded during the initial “push” into the Meuse Argonne. He would recover and return to Viewtown. Rollie would return to Viewtown also. In his later years, during the late 1940s and early 1950s, he operated the Laurel Mills Store.
