Almond chose to come to Rappahannock from coaching the women’s tennis team at George Mason University, he said, “Because my wife and I are looking to have a family.” He had to settle down. “My opportunities for playing around were ending—the travel, the weekends, and long commutes.”
Like most other coaches, Almond has moved often, but he was moving often well before he chose athletics for a career. Growing up, his father worked in communications for the CIA, which took the Almond family to Cyprus, and England and Laos.
