Residents want fast action on
speeding problem in town

The Washington Tbwn Council last Wednesday night reviewed a second Virginia Department of Transportation study that confirmed the town’s problem with speeding vehicles.
Many of the council members and citizens present were not surprised that the study supported what they felt to be true, but they were concerned about the number of cars traveling more than 40 mph in a town which has 25 mph limits in its core and a village atmosphere where many residents and tourists alike choose to walk.
Washington Mayor Eugene Leggett said the council would confer with Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz and VDOT engineer Garrett Moore.
“We’d like to know the full range of possibilities on this. We want to know what’s reasonable to request,” the mayor said. “We will take action. We will make a formal request. Whether that will be effective is another question.”
This is the second study conducted in the past 13 months stemming from complaints of speeding by residents. The first study showed speeds which reached 75 mph and the sheriff said a year ago August, he seriously doubted the validity of the figures. Another study was requested by the town.
The sheriff said he has not been notified by the mayor, VDOT, or any council member about this most recent study, nor has he received any complaints on this issue.
“I wasn’t even aware another study was going to be done,” said Sherertz. “I can’t respond to a problem I’m not aware of.
