Make sure to pack an extra T-shirt and maybe a ball cap just in case it gets warmer. And obviously, be certain to carry along a raincoat or Barbour jacket, rubber boots and maybe a pocket umbrella.
• Directions, cell phone. Horses must be reported on the grounds at least one hour before post time of the first race at National Steeplechase Association races, or else face disqualification. Make sure you’re running on time. Early is better them late. And don’t forget that race day traffic may make “your” route clogged; be ready with a map to find alternatives to the course if necessary.
• Hay in hay net.
• Human snacks. Many race meets provide backside meals, but some do not. Don’t risk being starved by post time. Pack a PB and J and maybe some pretzels. Think portable, easy, filling. Make sure to bring some water. And don’t forget the carrots.
