“Proper” dress, so easy to figure out for most situations, can be a tough one for a steeplechase race. In large part, the weather will dictate your choices — in other words, silk better stay in the closet if rain is in the forecast.
And rest assured, even though “proper attire” has been requested, that term can be loosely interpreted when it applies to the 40,000 attendees at the area’s premiere fall event}
The layered look lends itself well to tailgating attire, since layers can be added or subtracted depending on the thermometer. A cotton T-shirt with 3/4-inch sleeves could go on first, with a cashmere turtleneck and maybe a blue blazer on top. Add a horse-themed scarf and a Barbour coat on the outer layer. Remove at will.
The fall steeplechase season is just another series of horse races to some, but for most it’s a chain of “see and be seen” events in the Washington Metro area.
Think giant lawn party with horses in the background. Meaning, you want to present yourself appropriately because you will be checked out, much as you’ll be peering around to see what others are wearing, and how you stack up. Do your rubber boots match your hat? May not seem important as you dash out the door, but take a little time to put together a pulled-together look.
