“I tried to contact the owner in Maryland,” said Jonathan, “but I got no response.”
According to the web site, it was racing season. The site noted that it was not uncommon for these pigeons to stray from home, but that with food and water and a few days rest, most of them would pick up and fly home without issue. Hence the name, homing pigeons.
Weeks went by though, and Peep stayed on with the Partin family, using the garage as his home. “He made quite a mess too,” laughed Jonathan.
“There would be times during the day when we didn’t see Peep,” he said, “but every night and every morning there he was in the rafters.”
About a month after his arrival however, Peep befriended another pigeon in the area. “Maybe that’s why he stayed around as long as he did,” chuckled Jonathan.
Then one day, he was gone, as suddenly as he had come. Perhaps Peep and his new friend flew home together, or perhaps they made a new home for themselves.
Wherever that home may be, Peep has not flown far from the thoughts of one Rappahannock family.
