With an MBA to help, Simpson said she could see how farmers could struggle with the economics of farming.
“In the beginning, it cost me $300 to get a pig ready for market,” she stated. “Since then, I’ve lowered that. You’ve got to be able to figure out what your costs are — I mean pennies, what it cost you to get something to market.”
She said she’s seen farmers selling their hogs for 50 cents a pound at auction.
“A 250-pound hog would bring $125, and you can’t stay in business that way. I sell directly and cut out the middlemen.”
