Besides the bridle — within which a trainer has legion alternatives — blinkers are one of the most common choices for control. Nearly 3/5ths of horses on the flat race with blinkers, according to Hank Zeitlin of Equibase, the industry records keeper.
“We took a look at racing across the nation on Sunday, Aug. 29, and 54 percent (1,224 of 2,262) of the starters in Thoroughbred races in North America had blinkers on,” Zeitlin said. “If I were guessing, I would have guessed a little lower, but the numbers prove that more than half race with blinkers.”
