Despite their skill and sometimes 10, 20 and 25 years of experience, the deputies were some of the lowest paid members of the county government. One reason is that Rappahannock is a small county and under their assignments in offices of Constitutional Officers their pay scale is dictated by Richmond. Richmond based these scales on the population of the county. Rappahannock, with 7,110 persons, is ranked with rural counties down in Southwest Virginia and not counties near Washington.
Sheriff Larry Sherertz, also a Constitutional Officer, won a raise for his 25 deputies getting them a $4,000 supplementary payment to augment their salaries and in 2001, a longevity payment plan. The women on his staff are primarily dispatchers and jail matrons and not out on armed patrol. Other county employees, not covered by Richmond rules, have been better paid than the seven women.
The longevity payment allows for a five percent increase at the end of five years; 10 percent at 10 years; another five percent at 15 and 20 years all of which can accumulate ah amount of 25 percent more pay after 20 years. McCarthy estimated it would cost the county $26,000 in the first year.
