Staggered terms

In other action, the supervisors scheduled a public hearing on Oct. 4 on an ordinance to provide for the election of supervisors on staggered terms so that at no time will all members of the board be new to their jobs. The proposal calls for the election board to select, by a random drawing in Nov. 2007, two supervisors from two districts to run only for a twoyear term to stretch from Jan. 1, 2008 through Dec. 31, 2009. These two supervisors will then run for reelection for four years. The other three supervisors will continue to run for a four-year term.

The two election districts will be selected at a drawing to be held at a meeting of the election board “prior to the last day for a person to qualify as a candidate” in the 2007 elections.

Since Rappahannock has a School Board elected on the same day as the supervisors from the same five districts, the ordinance provided that each School Board member would have the same term
