Utilized regularly in the hunter-jumper ranks to muffle crowd noise, the use of ear-plugs in racehorses was popularized by trainer Jack Van Berg on 1984 Preakness Stakes winner Gate Dancer. The colt was incorrigible before the addition of ear muffs, said Van Berg, but the trainer added a full hood with thick, padded, ear covers to silence the general track hubbub, Gate Dancer went from difficult, dangerous runaway to classic winner.
