Steeplechasing and loafers go well together, or go with oxfords or flats. Tbo, rubber shoes and boots come in a rainbow of colors, so toss a pair in the trunk just in case.
And of course it is always considered appropriate to wear equestrian-themed outfits to the races even if you aren’t a member of the horsey set. Those darling horseshoe earrings go nicely with the Hermes polo scarf, and paddock boots are always in the right, but please, please don’t make the glaring error of affecting the equestrian look by wearing riding clothes if you aren't a rider. Fake jodhpurs look a bit out of place at a race meet, unless, of course, you are a jockey.
Plan your spifly attire carefully, but do allow for emergencies. A cool morning may give way to a balmy afternoon, or a sunny midday might spark evening showers. Pack a few extras in your trunk just in case.
Promise to remember, though: Even if the fall afternoon brings warm sunshine to tempt a final bit of sunbathing, do leave a little to the imagination.
